Sticky, humid nights are hard enough to deal with as an adult, but, for babies and toddlers, they can be very uncomfortable. Keeping your little one cool and happy while they sleep is essential to reducing the risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), and boosting their chances (and yours!) of sleeping soundly through the night. When Katie was growing up, we endured our fair share of hot, airless summer nights. So, after the first few, I came up with a special summer bedtime routine for her. Here are some tips to help you do the same.
Give them a cool bath
A warm bath is usually the perfect way to relax your baby before bedtime, but, in the heat, you could try giving them a cool bath instead – making it quick so that they don’t get chilly. I used to sponge Katie with lukewarm water to get rid of any clamminess before she slept.
Use a thermometer
The temperature of your baby’s room should be between 16°C and 20°C while they sleep. I always found that putting a thermometer in Katie’s room helped me judge whether or not I needed to make adjustments to the temperature before I put her down for the night.
Use a summer sleeping sack
Sleeping sacks are ideal for keeping your baby safe and comfortable during the night or a daytime nap. Our Slumbersafe designs are made to regulate their temperature, so that they do not get too hot or cold while they sleep. During the warmer months, you could put your baby, toddler or child (up to 10 years old) in a summer sleeping sack, as these are sleeveless and more lightweight. Our summer options are available in two togs (1.0 and 0.5) – take a look at our tog guide if you’re not sure which tog is right for particular temperatures.
Help your little one relax before bed
I am sure that we all know the feeling of tossing and turning in bed on a muggy night. It is easy to get frustrated or agitated in the heat, which is why making sure your baby is calm before bed is a good idea. You could cool them down with a cool flannel before they drift off, and perhaps put on soothing music or softly sing them a lullaby to help them relax.
When I was raising Katie, I would have loved to have found a comfortable sleeping sack that kept her cool during hot summer nights. That’s why I have developed the summer design for Slumbersafe – so that mums can help their babies sleep safely and soundly, whatever the temperature.
